چکیده
S N INCE THE INCEPTION of positron emission tomography (PET) several decades ago, PET canner design and performance have improved ramatically. The number of detector elements has ncreased from 20 to 20,000 and the axial field f view from 2 to 20 cm, the spatial resolution as improved from 25 to 5 mm, and the ensitivity has increased 1000-fold.1,2 At the ame time, the clinical applications of PET have rown dramatically as well.3-5 The current article eviews the technical basis of the remarkable dvance of this modality—the underlying princiles of PET and the basic design and performance haracteristics of PET scanners—emphasizing edicated “full-ring” devices and including multiodality (ie, PET-CT) and special-purpose (ie, mall-animal) devices.

متن کاملPerformance comparison of four commercial GE discovery PET/CT scanners: A monte carlo study using GATE
Combined PET/CT scanners now play a major role in medicine for in vivo imaging in oncology, cardiology, neurology, and psychiatry. As the performance of a scanner depends not only on the scintillating material but also on the scanner design, with regards to the advent of newer scanners, there is a need to optimize acquisition protocols as well as to compare scanner ...

Objective(s): The aim of this study is to examine the effect of different smoothing filters on the image quality and SUVmax to achieve the guideline recommended positron emission tomography (PET) image without harmonization. Methods: We used a Biograph mCT PET scanner. A National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) body phantom was fil...
متن کاملDevelopment and Performance Evaluation of a High-Sensitivity Positron Emission Tomography Scanner Dedicated for Small-Animal Imaging
Developing a dedicated small-animal positron emission tomography (μPET) system of high sensitivity presents an important challenge. To address this challenge, we investigate a non-conventional design strategy for developing PET systems in which the hardware and software components of the system are synergistically combined in such a way that the certain limitations of the hardware design are ov...
